Back & Posture Classes in Edmonton
Often times, we don’t realize how tightness in our upper backs can cause neck and shoulder pain or even low back pain. When the upper back gets stiff and tight, our more movable areas, like the neck and low back, begin to work harder and longer to compensate for the lack of movement in the upper back.
Back Tightness & Posture – It’s All Related
The stiffness and tightness in the upper back unknowingly contributes to excessive repetitive sprain and strain stress on the neck and low back which can lead to pain in these areas sooner than later. Furthermore, all that stiffness and tightness within the spine and muscles alters our posture. The back starts to round more, the shoulders roll forward and the chest collapses, and the pelvis distorts holding the weight of the upper body unevenly.
Dr. Vera Baziuk teaches and instructs a monthly rehabilitative posture and back exercise class. Here, students learn how to strengthen and stretch key muscles involved with posture to improve comfort and ease while sitting and standing. Alongside chiropractic care, patients learn how to actively participate in exercises that improve strength, flexibility and posture for long term benefit.
Class Information
The class is divided into two parts:
- The first part of the class focuses on legs. The legs are considered organs of action for the lumbar spine. If the legs become stronger and simultaneously more flexible, the work and pressure is removed off the lumbar spine. Students are guided through a series of leg exercises and stretches all designed to improve strength and flexibility for the legs and lumbar spine.
- The second part of the class focuses on the chest and shoulders. The shoulders are considered the organs of action for the chest and neck. If the shoulders become more flexible and align within the socket better, strength can return to lift the chest up, relieving pressure off the neck.
Please arrive a few minutes early to secure a spot as space is limited to 6 – 8 students. The intimate class size allows Dr. Vera to carefully watch participants perform the exercises correctly to avoid any injury.
